President Susan's Letter

Yes, we are meeting this month!

Sam Seltzer’s Steak House – US Highway 19 at Belleair Road

As we’ve discussed for the last couple of months, we will be meeting this month – August 25th – and we are trying out a new location. Meet us at 5:15 for cocktails, followed by dinner, and our meeting at 6:30 p.m. We will be ordering off the menu, receiving individual checks, and we’ll decide if we want to make this our new location. Our room rental will be included in the gratuity, which will be added to each person’s check. Mark your calendar and join us for dinner at Sam Seltzer’s.

Since our last meeting at Cathy Wagner’s home … and thank you again Cathy, it was a great time … your board has been working to put together a tentative plan of action, proposed budget and new chairs for our committees and projects. Thank you for all the suggestions, and thank you for volunteering at last month’s meeting. We will be contacting you to confirm your new positions in the next few days.

2010-2011 will definitely be a year of transition, modification and evolution to a new and stronger SI UP.

Let’s all work together to recruit and retain, and improve the lives of women and girls.

Hope to see each of you on the 25th ….

Susan

Information from Soroptimist Headquarters

Soroptimist of the Americas is ready to launch the new club email system!  Working with Microsoft, who has provided SIA with free email addresses for each Soroptimist club, headquarters will be working to provide each club with its new email address over the next several weeks.  Clubs will be able to view their club email from any Internet-enabled computer, by going to the Hotmail.com website, and using their new email address as the required “Windows Live ID” and their six digit club number as their password.

The club email should provide a “blind” contact for our club, in order to maintain the privacy of individual members’ email addresses, so the clubs will be able to receive and send email from this address.  It also ensures that all clubs have access to email technology, and provides a known electronic contact for headquarters and the public to be in communication with the club.

The club email addresses will be put on the SIA website, and will be the “public” contact point for the clubs from our website.  At that point, we can use these addresses for our own club contacts and to put on our website as a contact point for your club.  Headquarters will also begin directing club-based blast email messages (such as the bi-monthly club president’s calendar) to these addresses as well.

Now that we are totally connected, President Susan needs to make sure that someone is checking the club email address regularly and responding to messages in a timely manner. The prompt reply to messages, especially from prospective members and the public, is crucial to building and maintaining effective public relations. (Do I hear another committee forming? Or is it part of the Recruitment and Retention Committee?)

Please remember that circularization of the members or clubs, which includes using email systems to mass contact clubs in order to support projects or positions, is strictly prohibited between clubs in different regions by the SIA Procedures.

I have a copy of the Region Directory which has all the club email addresses in it (along with lots of other information).  If you would like an electronic copy, please let me know.  It would be good for you to try to access these accounts now, so if there are any problems they can be corrected.

A document on how clubs can sign into and use the club email system can also be found on the SIA website, as well as an even longer version of the instructions at:

Recently,  in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tanned  woman appeared in the window of a  gym.

It  said:     "THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A  MERMAID OR A  WHALE?"

A middle  aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of  the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by  the gym.

To Whom It  May   Concern:

Whales are  always  surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious  humans).   They have an active sex life, they get pregnant  and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with  dolphins, stuffing themselves with shrimp.   They play and  swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren  Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers  and have even recorded CDs.   They are incredible  creatures and virtually have no predators other than  humans.   They are loved, protected and admired by almost  everyone in the world.

Mermaids  don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the  offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity  crisis.   Fish or human?   They don't have a sex  life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how  could they have sex?   Therefore they don't have kids  either.   Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl  who smells like a fish  store?

The choice  is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a  whale.

P.S. We  are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only  skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with  my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee  with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so  much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more  room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies.   So we  aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and  happy.   Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the  mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I  am!"

Soroptimists STOP Trafficking,

SIA is pleased to announce Soroptimists STOP Trafficking, a new public awareness project addressing the trafficking of women and girls for sexual exploitation. This new project will provide information cards about sexual trafficking for participating clubs to distribute in the community. In addition, clubs will work to raise awareness through media and public events. The project has been created in response to overwhelming input from clubs and members indicating a desire for an SIA project that addresses this serious global issue.
The project will launch in the United States on Friday, January 11, 2008, the first National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness. The launch will begin with a public event at which clubs are asked to distribute specially designed flyers in transportation centers in their area: airports, train stations or bus depots. The event will focus on the public awareness message: "Someone in this transportation center may be here against her will," and will provide an excellent opportunity for public awareness and to gain media exposure.
Participating clubs will be provided with professionally designed cards and flyers; club instructions for the project and launch event; and public awareness materials to ensure the project is a success. The materials will be available in all SIA languages. If your club would like to participate or has any questions, contact siahq@soroptimist.org

Project Sierra  -$80000 has been donated so far for this project.  5/2008
Sierra is a four year partnership between Soroptimist International and Hope and Homes for Children which will transform the lives of some of the most deprived children and women in the world.

Project Sierra: A Family And A Future aims to raise £1 million ($2million USD) to help disadvantaged women and children in Sierra Leone face their futures with confidence.

By strengthening families at risk of breakdown, helping young children living on the streets return home and empowering vulnerable young mothers, Project Sierra will enable more children to grow up in a caring family environment - giving them the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

To learn how Project Sierra will achieve this, visit the Project Overview section.

Disaster Relief Fund for Women and Girls

Soroptimist's Disaster Relief Fund for Women and Girls targets the special needs of women and girls during natural and man-made disasters. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable during disasters and lack access to resources. They also have special abilities to respond to disasters, which is often overlooked. Soroptimist's disaster relief program mitigates the barriers facing women/girls during disasters. In addition, the program honors the commitments made by the United Nations in the Beijing Platform for Action and the Outcome Statement of the 46th Session on the Commission on the Status of Women. Soroptimist grants funds to local clubs for use in communities needing disaster relief. Funds are pooled from voluntary contributions sent in from Soroptimist members throughout the world. Soroptimist recently disbursed disaster relief grants to: the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support Iraqi educational programs for returning women refugees; the Ramona, California, Soroptimist club to help women recovering from the fires in Southern California; and women in El Chaco, Ecuador, to help rebuild the community's farming infrastructure following an earthquake.

Service Funds
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.)  Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)

Live your dreams
The following information is from the Soroptimists International of America Website.  To read more info, Just click here.. Despite much progress during the last century, women and girls throughout the world continue to face serious challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world'spopulation, women suffer disproportionately from many social problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages of 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the obstacles facing women and girls around the world. Soroptimist created the Live Your Dream campaign to raise awareness about these challenges and inspire women from all walks of life to realize their full potential.

Good Search
Contribute through GoodSearch
GoodSearch is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates 50 percent of its advertising revenue (about a penny per search) to the user's favorite charity. Ours, of course, is SIA. The pennies add up quickly. Consider that if only 1,000 members, friends and staff search the Internet just twice a day, Soroptimist could earn $7,300 a year - just for doing something we do every day!  If we think bigger, for example, 10,000 users searching twice a day will earn Soroptimist $73,000 a year! All you have to do is visit www.goodsearch.com and download the GoodSearch toolbar. Enter 'Soroptimist' in the 'My Charity' field and then every time you search the net on your computer, don't forget to use GoodSearch! Thank you for using GoodSearch to help Soroptimist fund our programs that improve the lives for women and girls. Let's see how much we can get those pennies to add up!
