Letter from President Mary

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

 Cathy Wagner very graciously opened her home to us for our July meeting.  After enjoying a delicious barbeque, followed by desserts, the group got down to business, and we were very busy little bees indeed.

Several members volunteered for committees as follows:

Telephone:            T Turner, M Gray – with a vacancy for 1 other member;

Parliamentarian:     P.  Arbutine;

Audit Committee:  K Curry (volunteered in absentia )

If you would like to participate in one of the committees, we’d love to have you.  Just give Terry or Betsi a call and let them know what you are interested in.  Sharing in the activities of our club is not only fun, it’s a great way to get to know each other better.

It was suggested that a Sunshine committee would be a good idea.  Really only one person is required for this, simply as a contact point, to keep us informed about members if/when they are under the weather, maybe need help, or maybe just cheering up.  You know, if you’ve ever been sick, how great if feels when you open a card, just knowing someone is thinking about you…  If you think you’d like to do that, let us know.

2011-2012 Plan of Activities

The following are some of the ideas we kicked around, they are not exclusive, so we’d like some feedback.  Maybe there’s something else you’d like to add..

1   Speakers Calendar    Most of us agree that meetings are usually more interesting (especially when entertaining visitors) when we have a guest speaker.  So this year we plan to have a Speakers Calendar.  The theme suggested was Health, a subject of interest to most people, with focus on Alternative Health Care.  Again this is not exclusive, and if you have suggestions about speakers, subjects, please contact VP. Terry turner.

2   One-Day Service Projects –

-       Fall Jazz Festival – coordinated by T Turner (if interested contact Terry)

     -    Macy’s Shop for Charity – 8/27 Betsi has Savings passes.  For passes, or         wishing  to participate at store, contact Betsi.

     -    C Wagner to have one-day project with young women she mentors.

If you are interested in participating in any of these projects, or want more information about them, contact Terry, Betsi, or Cathy.

3   District Meeting Update

District Meeting to be held Sat Oct 15 8am to 3pm at the Clarion Inn and Suites 20967 US Hwy 19 N.

Luncheon Speaker will be Cathy Wagner, on the topic of Women and Finance.

Optional dinner Fri   Oct 14 with Governor.  Further information from Terry or Betsi.

Award Projects

WOA – Discussion led to Lori Torman (Caseys Cookies) being nominated as a candidate.

.

Ruby Award  - if appropriate candidate can be identified we will grant this award.

Women Honoring Women. -  We will again hold this award luncheon.

As you can see, we covered a lot of ground, with everyone participating, with so much enthusiasm.  So much so that I got carried away (not literally – I only had one glass of wine!) and actually moved a motion, before being reminded I was supposed to be President.  No – I only had one glass of wine…honest.  But enthusiasm is infectious, and I must thank all of you who attended and so enthusiastically participated in our July meeting.  Every one of you was splendid – you were a joy to work with.

And a special word for Ronnie, who so gallantly recorded the minutes.  She did a great job!  Just think of it: Her first meeting as a member – and she took the minutes! And she probably doesn’t even know half our names.  Well done Ronnie.

Now, ladies, it’s time to take our break for the summer.  Enjoy your summer, come back refreshed, ready for another Soroptimist year.

Respectfully

Mary Ramsay

Women Honoring Women

At the last meeting, the club decided to host another Women Honoring Women event.  Last year’s event was so successful, we decided to try it again! Of course the event starts with having nominees.  There have already been two names put up for consideration, and we are now asking for your nominations.  Below is a link to the application form so let’s start on this project early!

S.O.L.T.
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.) Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)
