"This and That" from Marsha McGrath

February is…

National Girls and Women  in Sports Month – Celebrates and honors all girls and women participating in sports, recognizing the passage of Title IX in 1972, which guaranteed gender equity in federally funded school programs.  This is sponsored by Girls Inc., the Girl Scouts, National Association for Girls and Women in Sports, the National Women’s Law Center and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Spunky Old Broads Month – is a month long celebration for all women over 50 who are interested in living a regret-free life.

Women’s Heart Week – was Feb. 1-7 and has been recognized since 1995 when Women’s Heart Foundation raised awareness about the number one killer of American women: heart disease.  The program introduces fun activities to promote healthier living.  View the Women’s Heart Week video online at www.womensheart.org.  This is a turnkey program for health sites around the country to commemorate using the Seven Focus Days for women’s heart wellness and awareness.  Suggested activities include a Red Dress luncheon, free screenings and Heart Center tours.

Betty Friedan was born February 4, 1921 and is cofounder and first president of the National Organization for Women, born Bettye Naomi Goldstein in Peoria, IL.  She was an outspoken feminist who spent her entire career crusading for women’s rights.  She wrote Feminine Mystique chronicling the frustrations of the 1960s American housewife, to which she referred as “the problem that has no name.”  The book struck a chord with millions of women and is widely regarded as one of the most influential books of the 20th century.  She died in 2006 on her birthday.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 60th anniversary on February 6.  She became Queen of England in 1952.

Utah Women Given the Vote: Anniversary – February 12, 1870, the women of Utah Territory were granted the right to vote in political elections—50 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified.

League of Women Voters Formed: Anniversary – February 20, 1920 while meeting in Chicago, IL, to celebrate the imminent ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.  Leaders of the National American Woman Suffrage Association approved the formation of a new organization—the League of Women Voters.  With the vote for women just a few months away, the new organization was created to help American Women exercise their new political rights and responsibilities.

S.O.L.T.
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.) Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)
