President Susan's Letter

A belated, but very sincere Happy New Year

to each of you

and may 2010 be twice as prosperous

in every way as was 2009.

soroptimist

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 26th – our next club meeting at Sam Seltzer’s.  In tribute to Friday, January 11, 2008, the first National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness, our speaker is Sandra Lyth whom many of you heard at our District II Meeting … and as I am sure you all remember, a Women Honoring Women honoree last year.  She is closing in on trafficking in our immediate area with facts and figures that will surprise you!

Our Women Honoring Women, Women Opportunity Awards and Violet Richardson Award committees are very busing.  Some candidates have been chosen, and some are still in the judging and evaluating process.  Thanks to all of you who have stepped up and are doing such a great job.

Please review the Minutes of the November meeting and the Treasurer’s Report which are attached.

Looking forward to seeing all of you on the 26th

Susan

Soroptimist International of the Americas joins the world community in expressing shock and concern about the situation in Haiti. The devastation caused by the earthquake—in an already extremely poor country—is horrific. Tens of thousands of people are dead, and more than 1/3 of Haiti’s citizens are now homeless.

Because Haiti is part of Soroptimist’s European federation, Soroptimist International of the Americas has made a donation of $10,000 to Soroptimist International of Europe to support immediate disaster relief efforts for women and girls.

SIA knows from experience that women and girls will be disproportionately vulnerable to the effects because of existing gender inequalities that are magnified during and following any disaster. To that end, Soroptimist International of the Americas maintains a Disaster Recovery Fund to provide for projects ensuring that women and girls have the support and resources necessary to rebuild their lives and their communities. Concerned Soroptimists and other individuals are urged to contribute to the Disaster Recovery Fund to replenish the initial donation and to fund future projects to help women and girls in Haiti recover from this disaster. Read more about Soroptimist Disaster Recovery Grants.

Donations can be sent to Soroptimist International of the Americas headquarters, earmarked “disaster recovery.” Members may contribute securely by clicking here. Look for the “disaster recovery” donation line, and indicate "Haiti Disaster Recovery" in the notes section.

Non-members can contribute by clicking here and selecting “general programs” from the drop-down menu. Specify "Haiti Disaster Recovery" in the comments section.

For updates on what is happening from the Soroptimist perspective, visit Soroptimist International of Europe’s website. Updates are being posted regularly.

For more information about women and disaster, please read Soroptimist International of the Americas’ white paper: “Reaching Out to Women When Disaster Strikes.”

Subject: [Soroptifun] A generation prepared for cold and snow in England

Bob (wonderful gardener/handyman) who helps me, phoned on Thursday and said "no point in me coming, can't do anything in the garden".      Oh yes he could!    He spent a couple of hours digging snow, and I can now get to the bottom of the garden where the garden shed houses my big freezer, so I have access to lots of food!     I am leaving my external security shutters up at night - just in case of power cuts.  I don't want to risk them being down and me left in the dark inside!

I have several torches around the house, 3 large boxes of matches and numerous large  Yankee Candles which burn to upwards of 100 hours - just in case.    When I looked after Mum and Dad and they were in the 90's, I was also concerned about power cuts, so purchased a Calor Gas heater to have on standby.   I've checked it out.   It has a full bottle of gas and is working perfectly and in the dining/kitchen ready for emergency use.

I may try to get the car out today to visit my 93 year old friend who lives about a mile from me.  I have my Antarctic walking boots (I knew there was a good reason for keeping them), and thermal socks, longjohns, vests and shoe insoles - again saved from our month in the Antarctic.   I'll use my two walking sticks and be very careful.

We 'war babies' know a little about being prepared, don't we!       I don't know about you, but when I was a child the schools were never closed and I never missed school because of snow - not even in the winter of 1947.    I remember a very bad winter - think 1963 - when to get to work in Harpenden, I walked 2 miles to Luton Station because none of the town or London Transport buses were running.   Then took the train to Harpenden and walked a couple of miles to work on the outskirts of Harpenden on the main A6.     To do this and arrive at work for 9.00 am, I left home at 6.30 am in the morning.   Of course, the whole thing had to be reversed at night - but I didn't loose anytime from work.     My grandchildren have been at home from school all week in Reading - the teacher said "Don't try to come into school if you have to go up or down a hill.   You might fall and hurt yourselves"!

Keep smiling up in Liverpool -

Love and cyber-hugs from a cold and icy Crewe

I'm glad to learn you are OK with plenty of food and warmth and ready for whatever the weather throws at Cheshire. We have snow up to our knees here in North Yorkshire and cannot get the car out.  We were going to walk to the shops but as my shoulder has still to be in a sling I am afraid of losing my balance and falling over if I walk on icy snow.  We also have a stock of candles, an oil heater, and a rather strange heater that is usually in the greenhouse and like you also have the clothing we wore for our five weeks in Antarctica when we faced minus 25 degrees and even the water in the cruise ship froze.   My parents used to have a Beatrix stove which I remember mother could boil a saucepan on and we had coal fires in all the rooms instead of central heating.

I think our chatline friends in the north of Canada, Sweden and Norway will be thinking how pathetic we all are here making such a fuss when they have this every year.

I don't remember missing school - until the age of 11 I had to walk quite a way through the village to school and don't remember it shutting.  After that, from 11 - 18 years I had to catch a train from Haywards Heath to Brighton each day and then walk quite a long way to school in Hove.

Anyway enough reminising - this is the great opportunity to do lots of bits of clearing out of files in the study for instance, a job I keep putting off.  Also sorting out e mails, replying and saving as necessary.   One main concern is for our tortoise who is now around 90 years old and who has been passed down through three generations.  It is vital he stays at a temperature of around 4 or 5 degrees - freezing could make him blind and too hot would make him think summer had come and he would wake up and move around.  At present he is wrapped in lots of shredded paper in a small box within a newspaper lined wooden box with a max/min thermometer leading from his shall to the outside of the box.  The box in in the utility room which is not heated but not unduly cold.

I can't help keep thinking about Veronique and wish there was something I could do.  There must be Soroptimist Clubs in Paris who could perhaps help.

Take care

Love from snowbound Shirley

WOULD YOU REMARRY?

A husband and wife are sitting quietly in bed reading when the Wife  looks over at him and asks the question...

WIFE: "What would you do if I died? Would you get married again?"

HUSBAND: "Definitely not!"

WIFE: "Why not?  Don't you like being married?"

HUSBAND: "Of course I do.."

WIFE: "Then why wouldn't you remarry?"

HUSBAND: "Okay, okay, I'd get married again."

WIFE: "You would?" (with a hurt look)

HUSBAND: (makes audible groan)

WIFE: "Would you live in our house?"

HUSBAND: "Sure, it's a great house."

WIFE: "Would you sleep with her in our bed?"

HUSBAND: "Where else would we sleep?"

WIFE: "Would you let her drive my car?"

HUSBAND: "Probably, it is almost new."

WIFE: "Would you replace my pictures with hers?"

HUSBAND: "That would seem like the proper thing to do."

WIFE: "Would you give her my jewelry?"

HUSBAND: "No, I'm sure she'd want her own."

WIFE: "Would you take her golfing with you?

HUSBAND: "Yes, those are always good times."

WIFE: "Would she use my clubs?

HUSBAND: "No, she's left-handed."

WIFE: -- silence --

HUSBAND:  "shit!!...."

Mexican Lasagna  Reprinte from "Taste of Home"

(Rose Ann Buhle, Minooka, Illinois)

This recipe has been taste tested by your Soroptimist Board and deemed to be excellent!!

 2 pounds ground beef

1 can (26 ounces) refried beans

1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies

1 envelope taco seasoning

2 tablespoons hot salsa

12 ounces uncooked lasagna noodles

4 cups (16 ounces) shredded Colby-Monterey

Jack cheese, divided

1 jar (16 ounces) mild salsa

2 cups water

2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream

1 can (2 ¼ ounces sliced black olives)

3 green onions, chopped.

In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the beans, chilies, taco seasoning and hot salsa.

In a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in baking dish, layer a third of the noodles and meat mixture.  Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese.  Repeat layers twice.

Combine mild salsa and water; pour over top.  Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until heated through.  Top with sour cream, olives, onions and remaining cheese.  Bake, uncovered, 5 minutes longer.  Let stand 10-15 minutes before cutting.

Yield: 12 servings.

Soroptimists STOP Trafficking,

SIA is pleased to announce Soroptimists STOP Trafficking, a new public awareness project addressing the trafficking of women and girls for sexual exploitation. This new project will provide information cards about sexual trafficking for participating clubs to distribute in the community. In addition, clubs will work to raise awareness through media and public events. The project has been created in response to overwhelming input from clubs and members indicating a desire for an SIA project that addresses this serious global issue.
The project will launch in the United States on Friday, January 11, 2008, the first National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness. The launch will begin with a public event at which clubs are asked to distribute specially designed flyers in transportation centers in their area: airports, train stations or bus depots. The event will focus on the public awareness message: "Someone in this transportation center may be here against her will," and will provide an excellent opportunity for public awareness and to gain media exposure.
Participating clubs will be provided with professionally designed cards and flyers; club instructions for the project and launch event; and public awareness materials to ensure the project is a success. The materials will be available in all SIA languages. If your club would like to participate or has any questions, contact siahq@soroptimist.org

Project Sierra  -$80000 has been donated so far for this project.  5/2008
Sierra is a four year partnership between Soroptimist International and Hope and Homes for Children which will transform the lives of some of the most deprived children and women in the world.

Project Sierra: A Family And A Future aims to raise £1 million ($2million USD) to help disadvantaged women and children in Sierra Leone face their futures with confidence.

By strengthening families at risk of breakdown, helping young children living on the streets return home and empowering vulnerable young mothers, Project Sierra will enable more children to grow up in a caring family environment - giving them the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

To learn how Project Sierra will achieve this, visit the Project Overview section.

Disaster Relief Fund for Women and Girls

Soroptimist's Disaster Relief Fund for Women and Girls
UPDATE - September, 2009 from SIA Headquarters

Dear Soroptimist,
Recent typhoons and earthquakes in Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan, as well as the wildfires in California, have caused devastating effects. To our knowledge no Soroptimists have been affected, but serious damage has been inflicted in these regions. Headquarters expects that applications for disaster recovery grants will be received as soon as the regions can assess the rehabilitation needs of women and girls.

Soroptimist’s Disaster Recovery Fund disburses grants to Soroptimist regions and clubs to help immediate needs and long-term recovery in times of natural catastrophe. The amount of the grants awarded ranges from US$1,000 to US$20,000.

When disaster strikes, women lack mobility and access to resources, have increased family responsibilities and are susceptible to physical danger. Most often the unmet needs of women and girls after a disaster are not known until after the immediate crisis has subsided. For more information, refer to Soroptimist’s White Paper “Reaching Out To Women When Disaster Strikes.”

At present, funds are low in the Disaster Recovery Fund.  You can help build the fund and directly help women and girls recover after disaster by donating now. Donate online or send your contribution to SIA headquarters, 1709 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19103 earmarked for the Disaster Recovery Fund. Thank you.
Yours in Soroptimist Service,

Service Funds
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.)  Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)

Live your dreams
The following information is from the Soroptimists International of America Website.  To read more info, Just click here.. Despite much progress during the last century, women and girls throughout the world continue to face serious challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world's population, women suffer disproportionately from many social problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages of 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the obstacles facing women and girls around the world. Soroptimist created the Live Your Dream campaign to raise awareness about these challenges and inspire women from all walks of life to realize their full potential.

Update from SIA Headquarters - September,2009

Live Your Dream Art Contest

Soroptimist is pleased to announce the second annual Live Your Dream art contest, which invites boy and girl students, ages 4 to 18, to draw a present-day woman who inspires them. SIA encourages all clubs to promote this contest, as it provides a unique opportunity for clubs to engage with schools and generate local publicity. Contest materials are available at LiveYourDreamCampaign.org or in the Live Your Dream Art Contest section at Soroptimist.org.

Good Search
Contribute through GoodSearch
GoodSearch is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates 50 percent of its advertising revenue (about a penny per search) to the user's favorite charity. Ours, of course, is SIA. The pennies add up quickly. Consider that if only 1,000 members, friends and staff search the Internet just twice a day, Soroptimist could earn $7,300 a year - just for doing something we do every day!  If we think bigger, for example, 10,000 users searching twice a day will earn Soroptimist $73,000 a year! All you have to do is visit www.goodsearch.com and download the GoodSearch toolbar. Enter 'Soroptimist' in the 'My Charity' field and then every time you search the net on your computer, don't forget to use GoodSearch! Thank you for using GoodSearch to help Soroptimist fund our programs that improve the lives for women and girls. Let's see how much we can get those pennies to add up!
