This and That from Marsha Mc Grath

June was named either for the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter or the name from the Latin work juniors, meaning “younger ones”, as opposed to majors “elders” for which May is named.  June is also called the season of the unicorn, so get hunting for them, since June is also the month with the longest daylight hours.  Known for the largest number of marriages, this could be due to the namesake, Juno, who was the goddess of marriage and a married couple’s household, and it is consequently good luck to marry in June.  In Iceland, folklore says that if you bathe naked in the morning dew on the morning of June 24, you are supposed to keep aging at bay longer.

Marilyn Monroe would be 85 on June 1 had she survived.  June 3, 1972 saw the first woman rabbi in the United States, Sally Jan Priesand who was ordained at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York.  June 3 was also Josephine Baker’s birthdate and the dancer was the only American-born woman to receive the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor for her Red Cross work during WWII.    June 4, Marie Thible of Lyons, France became the first woman to achieve free flight in a balloon reaching 8,500 feet for a duration of 45 minutes.  June 12 is Abused Women and Children Awareness Day, a day to prayerfully put an end to violent behavior in American homes, schools, workplaces and communities.  Anne Frank was born June 12.  And, today, June 28, Kathy Bates turns 63, also Mary Stuart Masterson 45, who were both in the film Fried Green Tomatoes.  Clara Maas, born 1876 was the heroic nurse who gave her life in the yellow fever experiments of 1901.

Joke of the Month

Never  Lie to a Woman

A  man called home to his wife and said,  "  Honey  I have been asked to go fishing up in Canada  with  my boss & several of his Friends    We'll be gone for a week.   This is a good opportunity  for me to get that Promotion I've been wanting.  So could you  please pack enough Clothes for a week and set out my rod and  fishing box.  We're leaving from the office & I will swing  by the house to pick my things up.
Oh!  Please pack my new blue silk  pyjamas. "

The wife thinks this sounds a bit fishy but being the  good wife she is, did exactly what her husband asked.

The following Weekend he came home a little tired but  otherwise looking good.

The wife welcomed him home and  asked if he caught many fish?

He said, "Yes! Lots of  Salmon, some Bluegill, and a few Swordfish.
But why didn't you  pack my new blue silk pyjamas like I asked you to Do?"

You'll  love the answer...

The  wife replied, "I  did. They're in your fishing box ..."

Never  Lie To A Woman...!!!

S.O.L.T.
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.) Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)
