The 19th Soroptimist International Convention

Leigh Wintz has resigned as Executive Director of SIA, effective September 1, 2011

 Postings from NELI Network

CEO/Executive Director Soroptimist International of the Americas, Inc.

Posted March 23rd, 2011 at 4:00 pm.

Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA), an international federation of clubs for business and professional women whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world, seeks an executive director. Founded ninety years ago, SIA continues to work through its local clubs on alleviating the most challenging circumstances affecting the well-being of women and girls. With projects focused on stopping such heinous activity as human trafficking, dating violence, and domestic violence the members of SIA demonstrate their deeply held commitment to the meaning of Soroptimist – best for women. SIA clubs are located across North, South and Central America as well as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines.

After 20 years of outstanding leadership, the current executive director, Leigh Wintz, tendered her resignation effective September 1, 2011. Over these past twenty years, the federation has evolved to a highly functioning, financially stable organization with a strong professional staff. SIA, located in Center City Philadelphia, PA owns its own gracious building with carefully restored historic elements.
This is a rare opportunity for a truly visionary strategic leader who, working with the volunteer leadership, can lift the organization to its next phase of excellence. SIA seeks an experienced executive with the creativity and entrepreneurial drive to help the Board of Directors, members, and staff mobilize resources to increase the organization’s impact and visibility, continue its history of strong financial management and explore strategies for future success.

This and That from Marsha Mc Grath

You may be interest to know that May Day began in ancient times and is a celebration of Spring,
with maypoles and maying, and what is maying you ask?

Now is the month of maying,
When merry lads are playing, fa la,
Each with his bonny lass
Upon the greeny grass. Fa la.

The Spring, clad all in gladness,
Doth laugh at Winter's sadness, fa la,
And to the bagpipe's sound
The nymphs tread out their ground. Fa la.

Fie then! why sit we musing,
Youth's sweet delight refusing? Fa la.
Say, dainty nymphs, and speak,
Shall we play at barley-break? Fa la.

It is based on a text used by Orazio Vecchi in 1590.[1]

The song delights in bawdy double-entendre. It is apparently about spring dancing, but this is a metaphor for sex. For example, a "barley-break" would have suggested outdoor sexual activity (rather like we might say a "roll in the hay"). The use of such imagery and puns increased during the Renaissance.[2]

Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.) Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)
