giftsOur next membership meeting is set for Tuesday, November 23rd.  This is our Annual Gift Shopping Spree at the Silver Queen … thank you Pat for hosting this one more time!!!!!!!  Check out all the great deals the Silver Queen offers and the ‘special deals’ Pat offers all of us on that night only!!!!!  Bring cash, check books and credit cards and let’s get an early start on our Christmas shopping.  I won’t be there this year as I will be in Washington, D.C. (Arlington Cemetery).  I haven’t missed a shopping spree in years, so I will be thinking of all of you that evening.

It occurred to me that, with the new slate of officers (Mary Ramsey – President; Karen Curry – Treasurer; and Martha Gray – Secretary), elections in November, and installation in January, I ‘chaired’ my last meeting in October.   Glad I didn’t realize it then as I would have been weepy, I am sure!  I do want to thank all of you for ‘allowing’ me to lead our club as President … it was certainly my pleasure – even with all the difficulties – in the club, with my job and most recently with my health.  I applaud each of you for your ‘get it done’-ness.  What a special group of women.

Please mark your calendar for our Christmas Party on Sunday, December12th – Betsi will have more information at the next meeting, if not included in this issue of the SCOUP.  See you all then – if not before J

I want to wish each of you and your families the best Thanksgiving ever and may this be the beginning of a blessed holiday season and terrific new year.

Yours in Soroptimists,

Susan

Report from Karen Curry

Terry and I attended the Women on the Way Appreciation Luncheon today in the Margaret Heye Great Room at Ruth Eckerd Hall.  Our club was listed in the program.

It was great. I would say there were at least 300+ attendees and six student recipients of monies to assist with their education.  The average age of the winners was approx 35, all moms, and all overcoming sisyphean (.50 cent word) challenges.  One gal was legally blind and continuing her studies.  She told of her past deep embarrassment over her ailment and how she tried to hide it for many years as she was taunted by bullies.  She came to WOW and found the kindness and support she needed.  Now if that's not a story to believe in a higher power, I don't know what is.

The coordinator Shirley Crumbley spoke and Ashley Donald (a WOW student) sang beautifully accompanied by a baby grand piano.  Michelle Piccione of Dollars for Scholars spoke of the Dress Shop in the WOW offices and the people who contributed and the students who worked there.

Dr. Linda Hogans, SPC Director of Special Programs, gave a rousing send off in the vein of -

Yes we can!

It was wonderful.
