Save the date for our October 25th Meeting
A Halloween Party at Marsha's

Letter from President Mary

Greetings, ladies.  I hope you had an enjoyable, relaxing summer.  At least we’ve had no hurricanes to worry about so far, and a few heartfelt prayers might continue to keep them away for the rest of the hurricane season.

Could I take this time to thank all of you who have volunteered to participate in our committees.  If this is anything to go by WE’LL HAVE A GREAT YEAR!  If you would like to participate in a committee, you can still contact Terry or Betsi.  The more the merrier.

Our Sunshine Committee is now a reality.  Marsha volunteered for this role, so if you know of any member who is under the weather, or just needs cheering up, call Marsha – she’ll be our ray of sunshine.   Thank you Marsha.

We are still working on our Speakers Calendar, and Terry has that well in hand.  Once again, if you know of someone who would be of interest to the group, let Terry know.

One-Day Service Projects- Betsi will bring us all up-to-date with the results of the Macy’s project.  We still have the Jazz Festival next month, and Cathy’s project with her young women.  If you have an idea that would make a good one-day project, don’t be shy – let Betsi know.

The District Meeting is getting closer, and as you know is being held Sat Oct 15 8am to 3pm at the Clarion Inn and Suites 20967 US Hwy 19 N.

Luncheon Speaker will be Cathy Wagner, on the topic of Women and Finance.

Optional dinner Fri  Oct 14 with Governor.  Further information from Terry or Betsi.  Our Club has the reputation of hosting great District Meetings, so I am looking forward to it..

Now, ladies, Summer is over, you are all rested and refreshed, and it’s time to roll up the sleeves again, ready for another Soroptimist year.  Remember, if God is with us, who can be against us!

Respectfully

Mary Ramsay

Women Honoring Women

At the last meeting, the club decided to host another Women Honoring Women event.  Last year’s event was so successful, we decided to try it again! Of course the event starts with having nominees.  There have already been two names put up for consideration, and we are now asking for your nominations.  Below is a link to the application form so let’s start on this project early!

Women HonoringWomen Application

AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT

The Audit Committee members were Julie Anastasia and Susan Kinney-Lowell. President Mary Ramsey had a conflict on the day of the audit. The committee met on August 10, 2011 and recommends:

 1)    All money in savings account should be designated as General Funds

2)    Monthly Treasurer’s Report should have “as of (date)” on the report. It is recommended that the report be current up to the Friday before the SCOUP is sent out on Sunday.

3)    The Treasurer’s Report will report outstanding checks, if any, at the bottom of the report.

Beginning July 1, the monthly Treasurer’s Report will show expenses written in that month whether the checks for these expenses have cleared the bank or not. This will give the membership a better picture of what money is actually available. Outstanding checks will be listed on the bottom of the monthly report.

BUDGET COMMITTEE REPORT

The Budget Committee members were Julie Anastasia and Susan Kinney-Lowell. President Mary Ramsey had a conflict on the day of the audit. The committee met on August 10, 2011 and recommends the approval of the Operating and Service Budgets.

The Service Budget is based on estimated fundraising of $1,000 and expenses of $1,550 which will leave a deficit of $69.00.  If the total of $1,069 is not obtained by fundraising, it may be necessary to allocation money from the Brag Bucket and/or assess membership a small amount before the end of the fiscal year.

The Operating Budget is based on estimated growth of membership by 5 members. Expenses are based on the minimum required obligations plus travel and registration money for the President to attend the Southern Region Conference. This will produce a $1.24 deficit budget which is reasonable and obtainable.

SIA Board Statement Regarding SI
Dear Soroptimist Members,
At our meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 28-29, 2011, your federation Board of Directors discussed in depth the current financial sustainability, governance and business practices of Soroptimist International. We have expressed these concerns with SI for several years.
This past July, at the SI board meeting in Montreal, your members of the SI Board of Directors (President Sharon Fisher, President-elect Pat Donohue and Immediate Past President Cathy Standiford) made several attempts to have these concerns addressed without success, and decided to take the bold step of withdrawing from the July 2011 SI board meeting. While this strategy has been controversial, it did result in SI creating several workgroups to address SIA’s concerns. All four federations are participating in each of the workgroups. SIA expects these concerns to be resolved.
SIA has absolutely no intention of severing its relationship with SI. We look forward to clarifying our relationship within SI in a way that is beneficial to our federation, as well as to the other three federations that comprise SI.
As members of the SI Board, your SIA leaders must exercise good governance, including our fiduciary responsibility. SI’s financial sustainability, governance and business practices need to be remedied.
We will continue to share additional information as updates become available. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to improve the lives of women and girls.
Regards,
2010-2011 SIA Board of Directors

SIA is pleased to announce Elizabeth M. Lucas, CAE, MBA, as our new executive director. Liz comes to Soroptimist with a diverse professional background. Her experience includes 15 years with the American Massage Therapy Association and the Massage Therapy Foundation—where she began her tenure as director of marketing and communications, and served the last nine years as executive director. In this position, she guided the strategic development of both organizations, which includes 56,000 practitioners, 450 educational institutions, and 51 chapters. Liz oversaw creation of a global expansion strategy and initiation of a worldwide partnership to recognize massage therapy as a healthcare discipline. She looks forward to using her knowledge and experience to guide SIA into the future. Please welcome Liz and visit Soroptimist.org to learn more.

"This and That" from Marsha McGrath

WOMEN’S FRIENDSHIP MONTH      September 1-30

Every woman has special friends she can’t live without; those women to whom she tells everything, friends who will always listen and who know just what to say.  Women’s Friendship Month provides the perfect opportunity for women to acknowledge the special women in their lives.

September is also Gynecologic Cancer Awareness month, and Fall Hat Month, when men and women put aside the straw hat for felt or fabric ones, originally sponsored by Headwear Information Bureau.  .

Except for Jayne Meadows’ birthday (87) today, there is not a whole lot going on of interest.  Jayne as you recall was on I’ve Got a Secret and married to Steve Allen and an interesting fact, she was born in Chang, China.

Emma M. Nutt Day was honored this month as the first woman telephone operator, who reportedly began her “professional career” at Boston, MA and operated for 33 years.  It is interesting how our estimation of work and professions change over the years and how a field dominated by men was ultimately taken over by women and now is performed by both genders.

September has a couple of items, (important to me personally) 1.  Happy Cat Month, celebrating the joys of cat ownership (3 at my house), and 2. Library Card Sign-Up Month (anyone needing a card, go online to http://www.pplc.us/libcardform.shtml to read more information.

Note from Pat:  I worked these "Number Please" boards for 8 years.

S.O.L.T.
Service Funds are due on March 31st of each FISCAL year. (These funds are for the currant fiscal year.) Remember that you are responsible each year for $100 in service funds.  You may raise these either by writing a check,  advertising in our WHW ad booklet, or by using our banner to have your own fundraiser.  All funds raised under our banner must come to our service fund. Each person that participates in an ad hoc fundraiser is still responsible for a total of $100 in service funds.
(Example.  3 members hold a garage sale.  They raise $310.  The total amount must come to our service fund.  All 3 members have covered their service funds.  But if 3 members  raise $270,  each member is still responsible for $10 more to cover their service funds.)
